Step back in time and experience life in the mid-1800s. Kids will have an immersive farm experience that could include old time skills like making butter, and learning period games and music. We ride horses in every Pioneer Camp. To get in the spirit of the camp please wear period clothes. Here are some ideas: leather shoes, long skirts, shawls and bonnets or scarves, button shirts ( no t-shirts) , if possible suspenders and hats (no ballcaps). Please send lunch in baskets or wrapped in cloth. Lunch suggestions- jerky, dried fruit, bread, milk. Drinks should be in a mason jar. We prefer no plastics or nylons at this camp
Day one: Traveling the Oregon Trail Let's recreate an Oregon Trail emigrant experience. We'll begin by caring for all our farm animals before we say good-bye to head West. We'll walk/ride the trail, singing to make the long journey go more quickly and when finally we stop for a rest we'll snack on dried apples and water. Once we get to our destination, we'll need to to cook a meal and then even though we're very tired we'll play pioneer children games and dance.
Day two: Pioneer Settlers Camp
There is a lot to accomplish to make our new homes in Colorado. We will need to keep our farm animals healthy by feeding and watering them. We could make some applesauce over the campfire for lunch or churn some butter. We can enjoy period activities like making corn cob people, washing with a washboard, singing, dancing rounds and reels, and playing period games.
Day three: One Room Schoolhouse
What was it like to go to school in the pioneer days of the mid-1800's? Come find out. Before school starts we'll need to do our farm chores. Then we'll come running when the school bell rings. We'll sing, have a spelling bee, cipher on our slates, and of course penmanship. Recess is where we'll play period games, like marbles, cat's in the cradle, three-legged races, and sack races. After school we'll ride our horse home.
